I Have A Feeling

238 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was signed stating: WE ALL have the inalienable right to LIFE.

11 years later, the preamble of our constitution was written as:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, and promote the general Welfare – and that Detroit…. suggests that Healthy living for all is a right! NOT A PRIVILEDGE!

Yet, 173 long years after that, the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr was heard saying:

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”

But today I smile. I smile for our Forefathers,
I smile for Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr,
I smile for this Community
And I smile for our physicians at Sinai-Grace Hospital

I have a feeling today!

I have a feeling this morning, Detroit!

I have a feeling that the ideals of our forefathers are finally being addressed,
I have a feeling!
I have a feeling that the dreams of Dr Martin Luther King Jr are finally coming true,
I have a feeling!
I have a feeling the healthcare needs of this community are finally being met,

This feeling is that the emergency room physicians that work at this great institution will FINALLY have the space and technology they need to continue to provide the high quality and safe care they have done for years with very little, I have a feeling!

I have a feeling and this feeling feels very very very good!

I have a feeling that with the passing of the Affordable Care Act, and the Governor agreeing to the expansion of healthcare in Michigan, WE are getting closer to the PROMISED LAND.

Because, WE, the people of the Detroit Medical Center-Sinai-Grace hospital, believe that in order to form a more perfect Detroit- WE, MUST DO OUR PART TO PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE OF THIS GREAT CITY

Under the direction of Justice Conrad Mallett, I have a feeling that WE will now be able to provide navigators to connect the uninsured … with insurance.

In partnership with the county, Mayor Duggan and spiritual leaders like Pastor Solomon Kinloch, WE, will go to the churches, go to the schools and go out into the community and prove this land to not only be the land of the free and the home of the brave, but as a land free without unnecessary death and diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart attacks.

I have a feeling!

I have a feeling that under the leadership of Joe Mullany, WE, will maintain an unwavering commitment to the largest city in the state of Michigan.

Settled in 1701, We were here before the declaration of independence was signed and before the construct of the preamble of the constitution and with the right to LIFE and the promotion GENERAL WELFARE,WE will be here living longer and healthier lives.

I have a feeling!

That today symbolizes the end to the over crowdedness of our emergency department
Today symbolizes the end to less than ideal patient privacy
Today symbolizes the end for Detroiters to have to leave this neighborhood in order to experience a state-of-the art emergency department with continued high quality and safe care


We now have special treatment rooms for our pediatric and aging community

And, there are still more improvements to come:

  • Like our new Intensive Care Units
  • A new radiology department
  • And a new main entrance and front lobby

Detroit, WE, the people of the DMC have always and will always be here for you!
